BMW 5 Series G30/G31

The G30/G31 is the BMW 5 Series generation our specification records cover for US model years 2018–2023. Across that run EPA certified 43 versions of it for sale in America, under 15 trim names. It was sold as a sedan and Touring.

Dimensions are the figures the panel above does not carry. The G30/G31 measures 194.5 in · 4,940 mm to 195.3 in · 4,961 mm long, sits on a wheelbase of 117.3 in · 2,979 mm and weighs 3,704 lb · 1,680 kg to 4,550 lb · 2,064 kg. Length and wheelbase come from Transport Canada, which measures every vehicle sold in North America; curb weight from the same source.

The generation did not stand still: the strongest version rose from 455 hp in 2018 to 523 hp in 2023, and the best combined economy dropped from 30 mpg to 28 mpg. A G30/G31 from the first model year and one from the last are not the same proposition, which is worth remembering when a listing gives only the chassis code.

Set against the F10 that preceded it, the G30/G31 is 1.6 inches longer at the shortest version and 144 lb · 65 kg heavier at the lightest. Both figures are taken from the lightest and shortest version we hold for each, so they compare like with like rather than setting a base car against a loaded one.

Of the 43 versions we hold under this code, 25 are all-wheel drive and 18 rear-wheel drive; by fuel, 24 petrol, 12 plug-in hybrid, 6 mild hybrid and 1 diesel. That matters on the used market more than it looks: which axles are driven changes the weight, the service list and the price, and the badge does not always say which you are looking at.
