A new BMW comes with five separate coverages that run for different lengths of time and cover different things. They are usually described together as one warranty, which is where most of the confusion starts — the paint corrosion cover lasts twelve years, the scheduled maintenance three.

Whichever comes first applies in every case. A car that covers 50,000 miles in two years is out of the main warranty at two years.
The main warranty: four years, 50,000 miles
The New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty is the one people mean by “the warranty”. It covers defects in materials or workmanship for four years or 50,000 miles from the in-service date.
Two words in that sentence do a lot of work. Defects means something was wrong with the part as supplied — not that it has worn out. In-service date means the day the car was first delivered, not the model year. A 2024 model first registered in March 2025 is covered to March 2029.
That second point matters on a used purchase. A car built in one year and sold in the next carries warranty from the later date, which can be worth several months.
Maintenance is three years, not four
BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance for the first 3 years or 36,000 miles. This is the coverage that ends first, and the gap between it and the warranty catches people out.
Between year three and year four the car is still under warranty for defects but you are paying for its servicing. Given what BMW dealer servicing costs, that transition is worth planning for rather than discovering.
Maintenance covers scheduled items — the things the service indicator asks for. It does not cover wear items such as brake pads, tyres or wiper blades, which are consumables rather than maintenance.
The twelve-year one nobody mentions
The Rust Perforation Limited Warranty runs 12 years with unlimited mileage. It is the longest coverage on the car by a factor of three.
Read the name precisely: perforation. It covers corrosion that has gone through the metal from the inside out. Surface rust, stone chips that have started to corrode, and rust caused by damage are not covered. It is a warranty against the body rotting, not against the car looking rusty.
Electric models: the battery is separate
On BMW’s electric cars the high-voltage lithium-ion battery assembly is warranted against defects in materials or workmanship for 8 years or 100,000 miles from the in-service date.
There is also a capacity provision worth knowing about, because battery degradation is the thing used-EV buyers actually worry about. For model year 2022–2025 BMW Certified all-electric vehicles with retail delivery dates from 1 March 2026, the high-voltage battery is separately covered if the state of health falls below 75%, for 8 years or 100,000 miles.
That is a threshold, not a guarantee of performance: a battery at 76% health is behaving as expected under the terms, however it feels to drive.
What is not covered
The categories are consistent across manufacturers and worth stating plainly:
- Wear items — brake pads and discs, tyres, wiper blades, clutch friction material.
- Damage — accident, misuse, or environmental damage such as hail and flood.
- Modifications — a failure caused by a non-BMW part or a tune is not a defect in BMW’s part.
- Neglected maintenance — a failure traceable to skipped servicing.
The modification point is the one that generates the most argument. A remap does not void the whole warranty automatically, but it does give BMW grounds to decline a claim on anything the remap could plausibly have affected — which, for an engine or transmission failure, is a wide net.
Extending it
BMW sells Vehicle Service Contracts that extend coverage for new, pre-owned and Certified vehicles up to seven years or 100,000 miles. These are contracts rather than warranties — a purchased product with its own terms, not an extension of the original coverage.
Worth comparing against the alternative before buying: on a car you intend to keep past the fourth year, the arithmetic depends on the model and on how much you drive.
Buying used: what carries over
The New Vehicle Limited Warranty transfers with the car for the balance of its term, so a two-year-old BMW with 20,000 miles arrives with roughly two years of factory coverage remaining. Rust perforation transfers too, for the balance of its twelve years.
