“Are BMWs reliable” is asked constantly and answered badly, usually with a number
someone has made up or borrowed from a survey they have not read. This page does something
narrower and more useful: it sets out what reliability data actually exists for cars sold in
America, who owns it, what each source does and does not measure, and how to evaluate a
specific BMW rather than the brand.
The short version: no free, public dataset measures how often a car breaks down. Every
figure you have seen that claims to comes from a paid survey, an insurance book, or an
estimate. What is public is the federal safety-defect record, and this page shows
what that does and does not tell you.
The four sources, and what each one measures

Only the first two are free and complete, and neither measures reliability in the sense
the question intends.
A recall is not a breakdown. It is a campaign to remedy a
safety-related defect, filed with the regulator and paid for by the manufacturer. A model
with many recalls may be one whose maker found and fixed problems diligently; a model with
none may be too rare for a pattern to emerge.
A complaint is not a failure rate. Owners file complaints voluntarily.
Owners who have had a bad experience file more of them, and owners of enthusiast cars file
more than owners of appliances. The denominator — how many cars of that type are on
the road — is not in the dataset.
Survey data is real and not ours to publish. Consumer Reports and
J.D. Power both run large owner surveys and both sell the results. Their numbers are the
best public answer to the question and we are not going to reprint them, paraphrase them, or
present a number that resembles them.
What the recall record shows for BMW
Our extract covers BMW model years 2008 to 2022 — 146 model-year records and 628
campaigns. Grouped by the system involved, in two halves:

The airbag row is the whole shape of the dataset and it is not about BMW. Those
campaigns are overwhelmingly the Takata inflator recall — an industry-wide action
across nineteen manufacturers — and they concentrate in exactly the model years that
Takata’s inflators were fitted. Counting them against BMW as an engineering failure is
wrong, and any brand ranking built on raw recall counts for 2008–2014 is mostly
ranking Takata exposure.
Strip that row out and two things are left. Engine and cooling is BMW’s largest
genuine category, in both halves of the period. And the second half is dominated by
categories that are about regulation rather than durability: back-over prevention did not
exist as a regulated system twenty years ago, and seat belt and child-seat campaigns are
compliance matters.
The full category list
The two-column table above shows the eight largest. The complete set is longer and its
tail is more informative than its head, because it shows what a modern recall record is
actually made of. Counting how many of the 146 model-year records have each system as their
top component:

Twenty-one categories, and eleven of them appear once or twice. That distribution is
itself an argument against ranking: the difference between two BMW model years at the bottom
of this table is one campaign, and one campaign is well inside the noise of when a
regulator happened to open an investigation.
Note also what is not in the list. There is no category for “engine failed”, “gearbox
worn out” or “electronics stopped working after eight years”. A safety-defect register
records defects that create a safety risk. Ordinary mechanical wear — which is what
the reliability question is really about — is not in scope for it and never
appears.
The category that does mean something
Engine and cooling is worth taking seriously precisely because it survives the
correction. It is the top component for 28 of the 146 model-year records in our extract, in
both eras.
It also aligns with where a BMW costs money outside warranty. Cooling system components
— the water pump, the thermostat, the expansion tank, the hoses — are
consumables with finite lives rather than parts that should last the life of the car. A car
that has been maintained will have had them replaced. A car that has not, has not.
This is why service history explains more about a used BMW’s future than model choice
does, and it is not a platitude: it follows from where the failures cluster in the only
complete public record that exists.
What BMW itself pays for, and for how long
The ownership arithmetic is more answerable than the reliability question, because the
terms are published.

The gap between the third and fourth years is the one that catches people: the car is
still under warranty for defects while you are paying for its servicing. Full detail in

It has not always been arranged that way. The US brochures in
our archive from 2004 onwards describe a “Full Maintenance Program
covers all factory-recommended maintenance, as determined by the Service Interval Indicator
for 4 years or 50,000 miles” — matching the warranty exactly. The gap between warranty
and free servicing was created later, when the maintenance term was cut from four years to
three.
What that means for a used buyer is concrete. A BMW sold at seven years old has spent
three or four years being maintained at somebody’s discretion rather than BMW’s, and the
recall record says the parts most likely to have been skipped are the ones most likely to
matter.
Reliability follows the engine, not the badge
The single biggest problem with model-level reliability claims is that a model is not a
car. Our specification records link 935 US-certified versions to a specific engine family,
and the picture that produces is not one of models with characteristics.
The 2013 X5 is the clearest example. Three versions were
certified for US sale that year and they have three different engines: the
N63 V8, the N55 six and the M57
diesel. One model, one year, one badge, three entirely different ownership propositions.
The 3 Series over twenty years has carried the N52,
N54, N55,
N20, B48 and
B58. A sentence beginning “the 3 Series is…” is describing six
different engines at once.
And the corollary that stops the analysis dead: NHTSA files complaints against a
vehicle. A 2019 3 Series complaint sits in one bucket whether the car had a B48 or a
B58, and there is no field that separates them. That is why you will not find a
complaints-per-engine figure anywhere on this site, and why any site that publishes one has
guessed.
Why the newest cars always look best
One structural warning before anyone reads a year-by-year recall chart, including ours.
Campaigns are filed over the whole life of a model year, sometimes a decade after it ended.
In our extract the 2011 model year carries 62 campaigns and the 2022 model year carries 18
— and the difference is mostly age, not quality.
The same effect makes brand comparisons unstable. A manufacturer whose model years are on
average younger will look better on raw campaign counts than one with an older fleet, whatever
the cars are actually like. Any chart of “recalls by year” that does not say this is
misleading its reader, and the shape it produces — recent years looking clean —
is an artefact of the calendar.
The only comparison inside the data that survives the problem is a model against itself
over a long, consistent run. Everything else is comparing exposure times.
How to evaluate a specific car
Four steps, all free, in the order that saves the most time.
Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. It returns the open and
completed campaigns for that individual vehicle. An unperformed safety recall is both a
negotiating point and a free dealer visit.
Establish what the car actually is. Our

Read the service history against the cooling system. Given where the
recall record concentrates, the question worth asking about a high-mileage BMW is which
cooling components have been replaced and when.
Check the in-service date, not the model year. Warranty and rust
coverage run from first delivery. A car built as one model year and delivered in the next
carries months of extra cover.
What we will not publish
A brand reliability score, a ranking of BMW models from most to least reliable, or an
average annual repair cost. None of the three can be sourced to anything we can cite, and a
plausible-looking number is worse than no number because it is harder to argue with.

Common questions
Are BMWs reliable?
There is no free public dataset that answers this. The paid owner surveys from Consumer
Reports and J.D. Power are the best available evidence and we do not reprint them. The free
federal record covers safety recalls, not breakdowns.
What is the most common BMW recall category?
Airbags, but almost entirely the industry-wide Takata inflator campaign. Excluding that,
engine and engine cooling is the largest category and the only one that persists across both
halves of our 2008–2022 extract.
Are older BMWs more reliable than new ones?
The recall record cannot answer this, because campaigns accumulate for years after a
model year closes. The newest years in any extract always look better than they will look in
a decade.
Which BMW engine is most reliable?
No public dataset measures this, because NHTSA records complaints against vehicles rather
than engines and a single model year can carry three different engines.
Are BMWs expensive to maintain?
Scheduled maintenance is covered for the first 3 years or 36,000 miles under BMW Ultimate
Care. After that it is the owner’s cost. We do not publish an average figure because none
can be sourced.
How do I check recalls on my BMW?
NHTSA provides a free lookup by VIN that shows open and completed campaigns for the
individual car.
