BMW sells two different things that both get called hybrids, and confusing them is the most
expensive mistake a buyer can make here. A plug-in hybrid has a petrol engine
and a battery you charge from a socket, and it drives on electricity for a few dozen miles
before the engine takes over. A battery electric BMW has no engine at all.

This page lists every one of them sold in the United States, with the electric range from the
EPA’s own certification records rather than from a press release, and explains what the numbers
mean in practice.

Plug-in hybrids: the full list

Fifty-six model-year versions in our specification records, across eight
model lines. Range is electric-only range, as rated by the EPA.

The badge tells you which is which. A lower-case e after the number —
330e, 530e, 750e, X5 xDrive50e — means plug-in hybrid. A leading i
i4, i5, i7, iX — means fully electric. The exceptions are the two cars that got there
first: the i8 wears an i and is a plug-in hybrid, and the
i3 wears an i and was sold both ways.

The number that has doubled, and the number that has not

Electric range is where these cars have actually changed. The first X5 xDrive40e of 2016 was
rated at 14 miles; the xDrive50e of 2026 is rated at 40. The 7 Series went from 14 miles in the
2017 740e to 35 in the current 750e. Nearly three times the range in a decade, on the same
EPA test.

What has not changed is the shape of the proposition. Even 40 miles is a commute, not a
journey: past it you are driving a petrol car carrying a battery. Whether that suits you depends
almost entirely on one question — whether you can charge where you park. A plug-in hybrid
charged every night is an electric car most days; the same car never plugged in is a heavier,
thirstier version of the petrol model.

The i3 is the outlier and the history lesson. It arrived in 2014 rated at 72 miles, reached
153 by the end of its life, and was withdrawn — and then the cars that replaced it started
at more than 200. Nothing else in our records shows the pace of battery improvement as plainly:
the range of a 2022 iX is more than double that of the last i3 built four years earlier.

The wheels matter more than buyers expect. A 2026 iX xDrive60 is rated at 364 miles on
20-inch wheels and 327 on 22-inch — a 37-mile difference from a wheel choice, in the same
car, on the same test. Both figures are on the
specification pages for that model year, because the EPA certifies them
separately.

The most powerful BMW in our records is electric

This surprises people, so it is worth stating with the source. Of the 1,866 United States
certification records we hold with a rated power figure, the highest belongs to the
i7 M70 xDrive at 650 horsepower. Above the M5 CS at 627. Above the M8
Competition, the X5 M Competition and the M5 Competition, all at 617 with the
S63 V8. Above the V12 M760i at 601.

That is a fact about certified output, not a claim about which car is better to drive, and
the difference between those two things is the whole argument about electric performance cars.
What the data shows without argument is that the fastest-accelerating BMWs on paper are no
longer the ones with the most cylinders.

What the hybrid costs you when the battery is empty

This is the part the marketing does not cover, and our own data answers it directly. Put a
plug-in hybrid next to the petrol car it is based on, same model year, and compare the figures
the EPA publishes for both:

Two things fall out of that table. First, the petrol economy of the hybrid is
worse, by two or three mpg in every pair — which is what you would expect from
a car carrying several hundred pounds of battery. Second, the engine in the hybrid is the
smaller one: 181 hp against 255 in the 3 Series. The hybrid’s headline output comes from
combining engine and motor, and when the battery is flat you are left with the lesser
engine.

The 2021 330e weighs 3,902 lb in the Transport Canada records we hold, and the X5 xDrive45e
5,368 lb. Neither figure is available for the petrol equivalents in our data, so we are not
going to state a weight difference we cannot source — but the direction is not in
doubt, and the mpg penalty above is measured rather than inferred.

None of this is an argument against the cars. It is an argument for being honest about the
condition they are good in: charged. A 330e that starts every morning full does the school run
and the commute on electricity and never touches the worse mpg figure. A 330e that lives on a
street with no charger is simply a slower, thirstier 330i.

The i3 range extender, and why it is not a hybrid

The i3 was sold in two forms and the certification records show the difference cleanly. The
plain i3 is classified by the EPA as an electric vehicle. The i3 with Range Extender is
classified as a plug-in hybrid — but unlike every other plug-in hybrid on this page, it
gets no extra electric range from the arrangement.

Read that carefully. The range extender version has less electric range than the
plain electric car — 126 miles against 153, because it is carrying the extra hardware
— and buys back 74 miles of total range with petrol. That is the opposite trade from a
330e, where the petrol engine is the main means of propulsion and the battery is the addition.

How to read the fuel economy figures

Plug-in hybrids get two ratings and they are not comparable to each other. One is MPGe
— miles per gallon equivalent — which describes running on electricity. The other is
ordinary mpg for running on petrol once the battery is depleted. A car advertised at “70 MPGe”
may return figures in the twenties on a long motorway run with an empty battery, and both
numbers are honest.

Our specification pages carry the combined mpg figure from EPA testing for every car,
electric and otherwise, so you can compare a 530e against a 530i on the same basis. For an
electric car the meaningful figures are range and consumption rather than mpg at all.

Common questions

Which BMW hybrids are available now?

In our 2026 records: the X5 xDrive50e, 750e xDrive, 530e, XM and the plug-in hybrid M5, in
sedan and touring form. The 330e and the X3 xDrive30e appear in earlier years and not in the
latest.

How far can a BMW plug-in hybrid go on electricity?

Between 14 and 40 miles depending on model and year, on EPA ratings. The current X5
xDrive50e at 40 miles is the longest in our records; the earliest cars managed 14.

Is the BMW i8 a hybrid or electric?

A plug-in hybrid, rated at 15 miles of electric range. Its petrol engine is a 1.5-litre
three-cylinder — the B38 — mounted behind the cabin, and
the brochure describes a combined system output of 357 hp.

What is the difference between 330e and 330i?

The 330e is the plug-in hybrid, the 330i the petrol car. Both are four-cylinder cars; the
330i uses a B48 or its US-certified twin the
B46. Compare them by model year on the
specification pages, where the weight difference is worth looking at as
well as the economy.

Do BMW hybrids need to be plugged in?

They will drive without it, and the point of them disappears. An unplugged plug-in hybrid
carries the weight of a battery it is not using. If you cannot charge at home or at work, the
petrol version of the same car is usually the more sensible purchase.
