BMW M54

The M54 is BMW’s naturally aspirated inline-six of 2000 to 2006, built in 2.5 and
3.0-litre forms. It is the engine of the E46 330i and the E39 530i — the last generation
of BMW six before direct injection and turbocharging arrived.

What the M54 is

A straight-six with double overhead camshafts, 24 valves and Double-VANOS variable
valve timing on both camshafts. The 2004
3 Series brochure lists it as a “3.0-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC), 24-valve inline
6-cylinder” engine with “Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing”, “electronic
throttle control” and a “dual resonance intake system”.

No turbocharger and no direct injection: this is port injection and atmospheric
pressure, which is the whole reason people still talk about it. The same brochure lists
the smaller version at 184 hp alongside the 3.0-litre.

Where it was fitted

BMW also used the M54 in the X3 3.0i and X5 3.0i. The outputs above span both
displacements: the 2.5-litre cars (325i, 525i) at the lower end, the 3.0-litre cars
(330i, 530i) at the upper. Individual figures are on each

M54 or N52

They are consecutive generations of the same idea. The M54 ran to 2006; the
N52 replaced it with a magnesium-aluminium composite block and
Valvetronic. Both are naturally aspirated straight-sixes, both went in the 25i and 30i
cars, and the model year is the reliable way to tell which one a given car has.

What we do not publish

No reliability rating. NHTSA files complaints against a vehicle, not an
engine, and a 2004 3 Series was sold with more than one engine. Any number offered as
“complaints about the M54” has been produced by dividing a car’s complaints among its
engines on a guess.

Common questions

How much horsepower does the M54 have?

184 to 255 hp in US-market cars, depending on displacement and model. The 2.5-litre
version is the lower figure, the 3.0-litre the higher.

Which BMWs have the M54?

The E46 325i and 330i, the E39 and E60 525i and 530i, the E85 Z4 2.5i and 3.0i, the
E83 X3 3.0i and the E53 X5 3.0i.

Is the M54 turbocharged?

No. It is naturally aspirated with port fuel injection. BMW’s turbocharged straight-six
era began with the N54 in 2007.

What replaced the M54?

The N52, from the 2006 model year.
